Your Butterfly Season Approaches.....

The last couple of years, I’ve been in a season of too much. Too much on my plate.

First of all , let me say that I know many of you will read what I’m about to post and you will say, I’ll trade you places.

I get that. I understand.

I know there are so many going through so much more than what I’ve experienced. For that reason, I’ve kind of stayed away from talking about my circumstances.....’cause I know my drama isn’t the worst thing in the world....but on the other hand, it’s been something that has turned my world upside down, temporarily.

I do my best to keep it in perspective though.

I’m well aware that there are many people going through situations that make mine look like a piece of cake.

My drama consists of 2 back to back situations in my life.

My Mom and I have a home together. In May of 2010 , it flooded with half of the Nashville area. We had no flood insurance. I was just getting my feet on the ground with Entirely Apropos....and my life stopped....everything that I was planning , put on hold.

In May of 2011, we were still in process of putting the pieces back together from the flood and my Dad became ill. Now, I found myself putting the remaining issues that needed to be fixed on hold and travel to Wisconsin to help my Dad.

Dad unexpectedly passed while I was there.

I was so grateful that I was able to be with him on his final day here on earth. What a gift that was for me.

I came home to a whole new responsibility...closing up our Dad’s estate.

For any of you that know what this is like, you know what this is like.

When I named my business , in early 2010, something in me struck a cord when Mom and I came across the word “apropos”. It means an opportune time.

Now, looking back at the last couple of years I find it ironic that I would have chosen that word , and that it struck such a cord with me , prior to knowing what was ahead.

I have to believe that when that cord was struck in me to use the name “ apropos”, it was there for such a time as this. To encourage me. Every time I look at my business name, I’m reminded that it is an opportune time. I could easily look at my circumstances and see that this word hasn’t meant an opportune time ......yet. But it’s not over. I may have been diverted...but I still have hope that I can get back on track and see what is in store for me.

It hasn’t been one of the favorite seasons in my life. I’ve had to face a lot of fears and anxiety. I haven’t handled some things with the grace that I would have liked to, but on the other hand I’ve been surprised at how I’ve been able to handle some of the other surprises along the way. I’ve grown spiritually because of it.

I’m reminded of the butterfly that is in the cocoon....the struggle it goes through to be changed into a butterfly.

Obviously, this isn't my first drama in life, nor will it be the last, as life is full of opportunities to change us and mold us into the treasure that God has created us to be.

Butterflies only live for a season....I will embrace my upcoming season of becoming this butterfly. I hope it will be a simpler time and allow me to focus more on my business and be able to be a help to others...giving back as I have received so much from so many friends and family members.

I hope this inspires anyone that is going through a difficult time to hang on , your butterfly season approaches.

Recycled Card Rack + Trim = Unique Display

A few weeks ago, Mom and I were out junkin’ and we came across this card rack.

We pondered it for a few moments , couldn't figure out what to use it for ,

decided we’d purchase it and figure it out later.

As time went by, Mom and I had been discussing creating a section of notions in one of our booths at Harpeth Antique Mall.

We began chatting back and forth as to what we could do to display a plethora of trim that I had acquired at a tag sale several months back.

We talked about wrapping the trim around cardboard , then Mom pulled out a merchandising tag from her scrapbook supplies and it set off a spark.

We thought, what if we wrap the trim around a merchandising tag ....and then it hit us! We could display it in the RACK! Oh my! You’d think we won the lottery! Hahaaa! We were sooooooo excited!

We pulled the rack from storage, measured the size of the tags we would need and began searching for large merchandising tags.

We purchased 2 different sizes, for thicker and thinner size trim.

We placed the order, and within a couple of days...these tags were in our hands!

We couldn’t get the box opened fast enough!

Before you knew it...we had wrapped our first bundle of trim around the first tag and we thought it was simply charming!

We placed the tag with the trim in the rack, stepped back and looked at each other like we had discovered electricity! ( doesn’t take much to make us happy! )

I had some other responsibilities this past week that I had to attend to.

My Mom jumped in there and measured / wrapped all of the trim for me.

( I can’t thank you enough , Mom! You are the BEST! )

I’m happy to report , the trim and the rack are now on display at Booth 11, Harpeth Antique Mall - Franklin, TN. ...and we think it’s a fun display.

We know we are not the first ones to display trim on a card rack...but we thought it was so much fun how it all worked out.

Additional Information Regarding Tags and Trim:

We purchased the tags from Xpress Tags.

Using cardstock size #10 and #12 - Manilla.

We folded the cards as they were too long to fit in the rack.

We taped the sides together after they were folded.

It was good that it worked out that way as it gave the card extra strength.

The trim was attached using a small amount of heavy duty tape at the beginning and ending with a straight pin at the top of the card.

Some of the trim was heavy, we pinned it in the middle to help it from moving or becoming loose.

I hope you will let me know if you try this! It's a fun way to display trim.

The Transformation !

When we first moved into booth 11 at the Harpeth Antique Mall ( Franklin, Tn ) , back in March of 2010, this rack was one of our first pieces we used for display.

It’s made of wood, the shelves are made of raw plywood ( nice and sturdy , but not so pleasing to the eye )

We had full intentions of covering the shelves, shortly after we got settled.

....and then we had a life changing , upside down event experience.

...the lower level of our home flooded during the historic Nashville Flood, in May of 2010.

There is a lot that happened between the previous statement and this post, but I’ll save it for another time.

I am hopeful, as I feel like we are starting to pick up the pieces of where we left off, right before we flooded. We are tackling a few of the projects that were on “that” to do list from April 30th 2010.

Upgrading this rack was one of the goals we reached this week !

Mom brought her trusty staple gun , staples and patience.

I stayed out of her way, as much as possible. (wink)

We found a beautiful piece of upholstery fabric that we acquired at a tag sale a few months ago.

It was just enough to cover 4 shelves!

By the time Mom was done, I was swooning.

I thought it turned out great.

It brings the ambience of the booth up several notches.

No more slivers from the raw plywood...and I’ll bet everything that is displayed on this piece will be admired with perhaps a bit more respect.

Two of my Favorite Finds...The Story of the Vintage Wooden Time Clock Card Holders

Two of my favorite finds, quite possibly, ever.......

are these wooden vintage time clock card holders I purchased at a yard sale this past fall.

When I was walking up to the table , which was filled with children’s clothing and toys, my eyes went to something that was wooden, with numbers on it, which was leaning up against the table.

Only a section of this mysterious piece was peering out from under a jacket that was covering it. My heart started to race....could this be what I think it is? I couldn’t get to the table fast enough...I quickly lifted off the jacket and to my absolute delight, it was one of those pieces that I never dreamed I would come across.

I was trying to stay composed , but in my head I was screaming “ OH MY GOSH”, and it was really loud!

In a calm voice, that I mustered up, I asked the lovely lady that was having the sale, “how much is this piece “? I can only tell you that when she quoted me the price, I almost fell over. I couldn’t get my wallet out fast enough to pay her! While fumbling for my wallet , she announces she has another one, .... if I’m interested.

By now, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I had to quickly compose myself again and say very calmly, “ yes, I would love to see the other one “. She quickly ran into the house and out came with the matching piece.

I let her know how much I loved these pieces ....paid her quickly and couldn’t get them loaded up in the car fast enough.

What an awesome day that was! It was one of the later sales of the day, and at first glance, looked like it would be a sale mostly for children. I’ve had this experience more than once, many times I’ve found a treasure in the midst of a table that appears to be mostly children’s apparel or toys. (A coach bag and a vintage Bakelite bracelet come to mind, just for a couple other examples ).

I used to scrapbook when I had more time. I also used to have a scrapbook room which has now been converted into a storage room for my business.

I miss scrapbooking and I miss having the room to create in.

I think these pieces would have been so amazing hanging in the scrapbooking room.

I’ve had them sitting here for a few months now. I’ve seriously considered keeping at least one of them. After tossing the thought around, I came to the conclusion that I will sell them.

I’ve been able to enjoy them for a few months, I trust they will find a home that they will be admired and loved, as much as I admire and love them.

2012 - A Banner Year

Happy New Year!

It’s been awhile since I’ve felt like I could take a few moments and post something on the blog.

I’ve been busy juggling more things than I could possibly juggle , dropping more than I care to think about.

I've had 2 years in a row that have been quite challenging for me.

When 2012 was approaching, I wasn’t sure I could go into it with all the hope and excitement that I had when 2010 and 2011 were at my doorstep...because, as much as I proclaimed that those years were gonna be my best ones yet, they were filled with challenges that , for me, were above and beyond what I ever imagined I could walk through, back to back.

I know that in all my trials , I have grown. I may have fought it and may have had a few ( okay, several! ) melt downs along the way, but I’ve grown.

My personality is one of having her ducks in a row, as much as humanly possible . Not perfect, not everything in it’s place, but just your average ducks in a row personality.

For those of you that don’t know, one of my occupations consist of merchandising and creating vignettes. I am a visual person and I love creating and living in an atmosphere that is soothing and filled with decor that bring me joy.

This season of my life has been everything but ducks in a row. The last 18 months I’ve lived in a home that looks like a storage unit.. My gardens that I took so much time to grow and nurture , look neglected and unloved. My sweet dogs and Mr. Higgens the cat, have had to take a back seat to what our normal routine has been....and my business has taken a significant hit. All the little and big things in life that I took for granted have been turned upside down.

I’ll be honest. I have some fear announcing that I’m going to have a banner year, just because of the past declarations that I have declared ...but I’m going to do it anyway. I believe it is important and imperative to speak out those things that we want and dream of..... speaking out those things that aren’t , as if they were.

The power of our thoughts and words are very important , they bring forth what we envision and speak.

I also say that to any of you that have gone through some rough seas and wonder what is next that you are going to have to endure. Say to yourself....”I’m gonna have a banner year” ...and say it out loud so you hear it. Lets see what happens. Lets see if we do have a banner year. ( I’d even take normal, but I’m reaching for the stars with “ banner” ! )

Memoir of a Screaming Vintage Shabby Sale !

This delightful cup and saucer was purchased at one of my favorite tag sales from this past summer. I remember exactly what subdivision, and probably within a short time of driving around the area, I could locate the house...or should I say, garage?........ It was that special!

The lovely lady that was hosting the sale should have advertised her moving sale as a Screaming Vintage Shabby Sale! The words “Moving Sale” just didn’t do this sale justice.

She obviously decorated with a shabby style, and everything she had was high end, designer labels...and not to out use the word, but it was “awesome” merchandise, at fair to excellent tag sale prices. Sigh....

When I walked up to this sale, I found my eyes glazing over, I suddenly couldn’t focus and my heart was racing! ....This was the mother load shabby sale!

My Mom was also at this sale with me. As most of you know, at the time she was in the process of remodeling her bedroom with the vintage shabby style. You can imagine the two of us trying to focus and remain calm. Well, we didn’t succeed in that, but it’s OK....this was an exception!

After a good hour of digging and looking and looking again, we left with a full trunk. We couldn’t wait to get home to pull everything out of the car and take a closer look. I think Mom found half of her decor for her room at that sale. I walked away with my fair share to list in my eBay store , and the booth at the local antique mall.

This Redoute Rose - Roy Kirkham cup and saucer has been sitting on my shelf for a few months now . I haven’t had time to list it until today. I’ve enjoyed admiring it sitting on my shelf... not only for its beauty, but also as a reminder of the great fun we had at the Screaming Vintage Shabby Sale , that day.

Grandma Helen's Cheese Cake

Grandma Helen's Cheesecake has been a favorite in my family, as long as I can remember.
I have fond memories of enjoying this light cheese cake, while visiting her in the lower peninsula of Michigan.

We have carried on the tradition, and usually create this at least once a year.
This past Christmas season, we once again enjoyed Grandma's cheesecake. We relived all the great memories that goes along with every bite!

Several hours prior to starting recipe, cool one can Carnation milk in refrigerator
A couple hours prior of preparing this recipe, set out one 8 oz. cream cheese to soften.

Crust:
32 graham cracker squares crushed with a rolling pin. ( use a plastic baggie ).
Note: A food processor will crush the crackers too fine.

Pour bag of crushed graham crackers into a bowl and add 1 tsp. powdered sugar and 1 stick melted butter.
Mix and blend with a fork.
Reserve 1 cup crumbs for a topping.
Place the rest in the bottom of a 9 x 13 glass cake pan.
Pat down with a Spatula.

Filling:
Dissolve 1 small lemon Jello in 1 cup boiling water. Let it cool.

Mix together:
1 8oz. cream cheese softened
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Set Aside

Beat 1 can chilled carnation milk , less 1/3 cup.
Whip until stiff.

Combine the jello mixture with the cheese mixture and beat on low for about a minute.
Add the milk and mix until blended.

Pour into crust.

Cover with the reserve crumbs.

( Note: The 1/3 cup carnation milk that was removed, is not used in the recipe )

This cheesecake is light and airy , with a lemon flavor!

This will keep for several days in the refrigerator, or you can freeze for a later date.

Grandma Helen would be thrilled to share this recipe, she would also be thrilled to know that it carries such great memories for her grandchildren.

Honoring My Mom,This Christmas Season...

This year hasn’t exactly gone as I would have liked , nor how I tried to plan for it....and going along with that theme....nor has this Christmas season.

As most of you know, the lower level of our home flooded ,with half of Nashville, on May 1 and 2nd.

It has thrown me off... at so many levels. No one could have prepared me for how much of an upheaval it would be! ...and ... I didn’t get to decorate anything for Christmas this year! ( whaaaa!)

We ( Mom and I ) usually decorate the outside of our home, and have a lovely display for the porch. We also decorate the living room , kitchen and my work area , which was formally known as the “studio”!

Gratefully, my Mother is an avid fan of decorating for the Christmas season. Well, she is an avid fan of Christmas!
She is retired... and although you would think she would have all the time in the world to decorate, it’s a sacrifice to do so this year. However... Mom made it a priority! There are so many things that still need our attention....but ....the Christmas decorations WILL be up , and sparkling , in the recently renovated downstairs area that flooded !

I’m grateful for her determination, as it wasn’t an easy task. She managed to get the living room decorated and add some Christmas spirit to the kitchen! I don’t know how she did it! Very few people will see her incredible workmanship of decorating , as we don’t have a very large family. However, the small amount of people that will see her dedication to celebrating this wonderful Christmas season,WILL feel the love!

I want to honor my Mom at this time , and all the spectacular things she has done to help me and so many others, in the middle of a chaotic year ! She is the true meaning of Christmas. She helps so many and gives so much to all that cross her path . I’m honored to have her as a Mom , and I hope I can someday walk in her steps , as she is truly an inspiration to me!

This year, my Christmas isn’t about having everything in order and all the things that I love to do that normally make it so special...no , this year, it’s about recognizing the true meaning of Christmas! We’ve experienced it, all year long!

I wish you and your family, a Merry Christmas!

Serving Some Vintage Shabby Decor !

This summer, while stocking our booth at the antique mall, Mom and I happened to notice these charming vintage shabby style plates! They were in the booth next to ours, calling our names!

We ventured over and took a closer look. Sure enough, they were vintage and shabby! The colors matched the decor in the vintage shabby room we were in process of decorating. The plates were priced to sell!

We brought them home and tucked them away until we could find a plate rack at a tag / garage sale. It wasn’t but a couple of weeks and sure enough, a plate rack was found!

Happy December! ( Oh my!!)

We continue to work towards catching up around here from the past 7 months. I’ve not been able to post as much on the blog as I had originally hoped...but I guess that is what a new year brings...new aspirations of old hopes! I “hope” I will be able to blog more in the coming year , taking you along on my journey of buying and selling gently used items and experiencing some fun ideas along the way!

Speaking of catching up, I’m determined to show you this completed shabby vintage room before the end of the year! Never would have thought that it would take me this long to publish this event...I think it’s taken me longer to publish , than it was to create it! So sorry!!!

As the room started taking shape, Mom mentioned that she would like a different light fixture, as the one she had wasn’t cutting it in a shabby vintage style room. We talked about some ideas, but when the thought of a small “ chandelier” came to our imagination , we knew that it was the perfect solution to finish off this charming room!

We had been on the look out for one for some time and hadn’t had any luck finding ANY chandeliers.
Mom started the process of plan B, which was considering purchasing a chandelier at a retail price/ retail store. She spent quite a lot of time looking and searching for the one she loved at a price that was affordable! She was about to commit to one when we stumbled onto a neighborhood yard sale! The sale had opened early, and we happened to be running an errand about the time she placed the “YARD SALE ‘ sign on the fence! My car came to a screeching halt as we both ( mom and I ) grinned at each other with much excitement! Oh boy, it’s a freebie sale! ( unannounced and not advertised ! ) The first thing my eyes landed on , while we were walking towards the sale, was this ADORABLE charming small and unique CHANDELIER ! I couldn’t get to it fast enough! I grabbed it up and almost hugged it! There it was...the perfect shabby chandelier! Mom and I looked it over and both agreed, this is it!!!

We had it re-wired and installed within days. It needed some lampshades and some bling to make it sparkle. We found the lampshades at Lowes, and we purchased the crystal trim at JoAnns. Mom spent a few hours , carefully glueing the trim work on each shade.

Although it was very charming, Mom still hoped for more bling to bring it up a notch! Before we knew it, we were at a tag sale, Mom found a bag of crystals and a string of bling to add to the lamp.
The cost to do this project is as follows:
Lamp: $10. ( tag sale )
Re-wire lamp: $15.
Medallion above lamp, on ceiling : $5. (tag sale)
Note: Medallion was painted prior to hanging to match decor
Lamp Shades : $ 25. ( Lowes)
Trim work for shade: $ 15. ( JoAnns craft store)
Bag of bobbles and string of crystals :$1. ( tag sale! )

Labor to hang lamp $ 25.

Total $96.

It was so much fun to see it all come together! Every time we look at that lamp...we smile!

As I enter into this season of Thanksgiving , it won't take much for me to be reminded of all the blessings I’ve experienced this past year. I get choked up and overwhelmed with gratefulness and appreciation when I look back at where we have been.

The lower level of our home flooded in May.
I knew this was going to be a challenge to get our home put back together, but I had no idea at the time what would be required, or how this would all work out.

Looking back, I’m in awe . I’ve experienced miracles, I’ve experienced what it feels like to have family members and friends rally around you.
We experienced the gift of unconditional giving when a group of over 20 strangers came to our rescue to tear out the damaged flooring and walls. It would have cost us over half of our FEMA fund in order to have that done, had we hired someone.

It’s been an amazing journey...no I wouldn’t have chosen to go through it, had I had a choice. However, I would have missed out on experiencing all these blessings , love and compassion from so many!

Yes things are still out of order ( I struggle with that, as I do better in an environment that has order ) and yes I have been, and continue to be overwhelmed at times...but we have a home.

Our home is in better condition than it was prior to the flood. We have a new updated look downstairs and Mom has a whole new bedroom and scrapbooking room that she adores.
We have a drainage system around the lower level.
Other issues that would have never been exposed if it weren't for the flood, are now taken care of.

It won’t take much for me on Thanksgiving to find the things I’m thankful for, it will take me time to count them all!

It's Just Perfect for the Shabby Vintage Room!

This is one of my favorite finds we came across this summer, while out treasure hunting! ( garage and yard sale-ing!)
This piece is full of storage! The door on the right, opens up to4 shelves. It’s just as charming as can be....perfect for the shabby vintage room that we are putting together on a budget!
Here is the kicker, we found it late in the morning.....for $20. Yes, $20 !

It's all about the details!

Every weekend of tag sale shopping ( garage /yard sales ) , we have been able to move forward in our quest to give this room, a shabby vintage make over! ( please see prior posts regarding our progress in putting our home back together after it flooded in May, 2010)

Whether it be a needed piece of furniture, or decorative pieces ...it’s all coming together quickly. I need to emphasize ...it’s come together much faster than what we anticipated!
Don’t be discouraged if you are trying to do the same type of project and your hunt hasn’t gone quite as easy. I can’t explain this phenomenon of how fast this has come together! Ha!

Not only have we found some unique pieces at tag sales, but we also have found some great finds at the antique mall! (Harpeth Antique Mall - Franklin, TN.)

These adorable glass spheres were tucked inside a case that was surrounded by vintage jewelry. All three were $6.- total ! We didn’t really think about what their original purpose was when we purchased them. After studying them more closely , we decided they were probably finials for a drapery rod. Just another fun example of re-purposing something!

We also came upon this adorable foot stool for $10. It makes me smile every time I look at it!

What Started this Shabby - Vintage Bedroom Decor Adventure!

I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I’ve posted something . Time has gotten away from me! Yikes!!! ( I think many of you can relate!)
I’m juggling a little too much for my comfort zone, dropping a few balls along the way...regardless, moving forward !

We ( Mom and I ) continue the process of restoring our 5 rooms that flooded in May, during the Historic Nashville Flood.

We’ve been busy shopping ( garage sales ) to replace Mom's bedroom furniture, creating a room that reflects a shabby vintage style.

As mentioned in earlier posts, I am in process of taking you through our experience of changing out a room, on a budget - via garage sales / thrift store finds.

Honestly, we are a little shocked how quickly we were able to complete this project. Just a few more decorations are needed.

I’m excited to show you what we’ve done on a budget , and hopefully inspire you !

What started the thought to change out her room to this style of shabby - vintage, is this beautiful bedspread we purchased at a tag sale ( garage sale ).

This quilted bedspread is filled with roses in pink / cranberry colors, creamy white background. We paid $15. for the quilt and 2 pillow shams - in like new condition!

A couple weeks later, we came across the bed skirt. Purchased at a tag sale, in new-original packaging, $5.

The black pillow, with embroidery , was purchased at our local Harpeth Antique Mall for $5. - in like new condition! ( we have more black accents in the room, which I will show you later! )

The iron headboard was purchased at a furniture sale at our local thrift store - $20.
(The bed frame was included in the price of the headboard)

Total cost for this new look : $ 45.

I’m excited to show you the remaining pieces of furniture and decor we found , you’ll be amazed at the prices!

Benefit Fund Raiser for 3 mo. old - Witt Deane

I look forward to my Friday and Saturday mornings , all week long. It’s the two days of the week that I shop for the latest and greatest additions for our booth at the antique mall, eBay and Etsy. You just never know what you will find !!! ( part of the thrill! )

I love being able to spend time with my Mom on these treasure hunting mornings, and if by chance we have a friend that comes along, it’s a bonus! Today was a bonus day! We had our dear friend , Sandi , come along for the hunt.

We all managed to come home with some pretty sweet bounty!
Sandi found some really unique pieces for her scrapbooking room , and a mens bike! ( the bike was only $20. - looks like it was barely used! What a deal!! )

Moms prize for the day was 2 antique vintage shabby style prints, a silver candelabra, unique Teleflora Chevy (1957 model ) Bel Air container, white jewelry chest and a vintage cream crocheted throw!

My bounty includes a Coach bag a box of vintage door knobs and discontinued dishes. ALL of it can be seen in the pictures attached. I had a great day!

One of the sales we attended today was a fund raiser. It was a fantastic sale. Prices were good and we were able to purchase most of the vintage items at this sale. It’s nice to be able to not only shop for our own pleasure, but knowing that the money raised is being used to save a life.

If you live in the Franklin area, and you are able to attend this event...please go! They are open today Friday the 13th, and Saturday the 14th. 8:00 -2:00. Westhaven subdivision , near Harris Teeter ( off of 96W) They had all kinds of fantastic treasures, at very good prices!

Putting the Cart in Front of the Horse!

As most of you know, we are in process of moving back into the lower level of our home. Along the way, we decided to change some things around ...new colors and a new look in the rooms!

We are changing out my Mom’s bedroom into a vintage shabby look. We’ve been shopping at garage sales and thrift stores, creating this on a budget! We’ve found some unique pieces and some great bargains. Here is another example !

We found this charming dresser mirror at a tag sale a few weeks ago. It was painted white, with hand painted roses along the mirror frame and at the base. Normally we would have left this alone as it would have lent itself to the shabby look. However, the roses were everywhere... and for us, was a little too busy. We decided to sand them off and just go with white.

This piece cost $8. and about 1 hour of sanding and painting.
It’s a unique piece that has added a new look to the dresser.

We found the mirror before we found the dresser. So much fun how this turns out, kind of like putting the cart in front of the horse! Don’t ever be afraid to pick up something that you don’t quite know what to do with...you’ll figure it out as you go along!

The Latest Finds: Work Table and Rugs !

As we are working on piecing together the shabby vintage room, we’ve also come across some pieces that would lend themselves to the computer / scrapbook room!

Originally Mom had a vintage drafting table to use in this room as a work table. The table had some issues and wasn’t comfortable for her to sit at. She sold the table (at the booth / antique mall ) a couple of weeks ago. ( sold for $75.) She took the money from that sale and is applying it to finding some new pieces for this room.

Recently, our neighbor asked us if we would be interested in taking a look at some of his furniture he was selling. We set up a time to meet him , and walked across the street to see what kind of treasures would await us! There it was.....a work table! Our neighbor used it in his studio as a table to paint his art on. It had some character to it ( which we love! ) , just needed to be sanded down here and there and have a fresh coat of paint !

Mom painted the piece this weekend, and we were able to move it into the room last night. It has been painted black and looks striking against the olive green walls with the black baseboards! Mom also painted the desk riser to match the table. ( She previously had that on her other table - handy for extra storage, or a perch for Mr. Higgens to watch the birds out the window!)

The other recent treasure we found for this room are the rugs. Those were purchased ( late in the morning) last Friday, while out garage sale-ing! They are stunning! Black, cream and soft green background with red and pink roses. The rugs are woven. We purchased them from a dealer that was changing out her booth. Here’s the best part .....we paid $15. for BOTH rugs ,and $15. for the work table!
Mom's scrapbooking room is going to have a whole new look , and the cost is minimal!

The curtains were also a garage sale find( from last year). They are Waverly panels. They have bright red and pink cabbage roses. Looks great with the rugs! ( can’t remember what we paid for them, but probably no more than $5. )

We are still on the hunt for another cupboard style piece to hold her scrapbook embellishments.

I’ll update you on the room as we continue to move into our remodeled lower level of our home.

I Love the Unexpected!

One of my favorite things to do when decorating, is to re-purpose .

Door knockers are a perfect example.
Instead of using it for it’s intended purpose, use this as a towel holder!

You can hang one, or create a display using several!

Door knockers can be found at tag sales, thrift stores and antique stores / malls.
They can be spray painted , if needed.

It’s a fun way to use something, in an unexpected way!

25 Cents + 50 Cents = A One of a Kind Lamp!

Mom and I are embarking on creating a vintage shabby room , on a budget via garage sale/ thrift store finds!

A couple of weeks ago we found this vintage lamp at a garage sale for 25 cents! Wow!!!!
This past weekend we found this shade for 50 cents!! Wow #2 !!!!!

I’m always amazed at how these things come together. When we purchased the shade, we really hadn’t given the lamp( we had picked up earlier) any thought.
After we returned home from treasure hunting ( garage sale-ing), Mom remembered the lamp and put the two together.

This may or may not end up in the shabby vintage room, as it would lend itself to her decor in her scrapbook/ computer room or living room.
Whichever room it ends up in , it will look great!

This is why I Love to Shop at Garage Sales!

We are getting closer and closer to completing the shabby vintage bedroom.

This weekend we found several more pieces ( purchased at garage sales! ) that will help complete the room.
I wanted to show you the curtains that were found yesterday.... they are just beautiful!
Here’s the best part...they were 50 cents! Can you believe it? This is why I love to shop at garage sales!
It’s a great way to decorate on a budget, and you will end up with one of a kind unique decor!

Another plus about decorating with gently used items is that if you find something else down the road that you like more...you can switch it out without buyers remorse! Sell the item that you are trading out at your next garage sale, or donate it your favorite thrift store.

Adventure in Spring Hill, Tennesse - Part 2

As mentioned yesterday, we ( Mom and I ) went on an adventure to Spring Hill, Tennessee to treasure hunt for a dresser for Mom’s vintage shabby room. We found the dresser at a consignment shop, and just a few doors down is the antique mall .... would be terribly wrong if we didn't check it out!

I love this mall! Every vendor has their own unique style in displaying their latest finds. The prices are fair and the atmosphere makes you want to linger all day long.

You can find everything from vintage clothing to sparkly jewelry. Primitive furniture and yes, shabby vintage!

If you get to Spring Hill, please take some time to stop at the mall. You will enjoy!

Where The Heck Have We Been?

The Dresser !

The Store!

As we ( Mom and I ) have been spending our weekends shopping for merchandise to sell at the antique booth ( Harpeth Antique Mall ) , eBay and Etsy..we’ve found ourselves gravitating towards the white cream and roses , shabby looking merchandise. It sells well, and so much fun to find!

As most of you know, our downstairs flooded during the Nashville flood in May. We are finally to a point where we can start painting rooms and thinking about putting the house back together, decoratively! For the most part, Mom isn’t changing much in her downstairs area...new colors on the walls, a few more black pieces of furniture in her living room....but the bedroom....well, that is all going to change! Shabby vintage, here we come! ( it rubbed off on us! )

After making the decision to change out that bedroom, we have been hunting for furniture and all the fun accessories . Mostly shopping at garage sales, and through Craigslist. Yes, my Mom has a fetish for both! She loves to wander through the ads on Craiglist for any unique piece, and finding a bargain is half the fun ! We have purchased many pieces of furniture on Craigslist in the past few years. Always have had a great experience and have met some wonderful people along the way!

So far for Mom’s new room, we were able to find a wonderful iron headboard and a flip top desk. We’ve not been able to find a dresser.... until yesterday. Mom found one posted on Craigslist. It was a dresser that was on consignment at a store in Spring Hill , TN ( about 20 minutes outside of Franklin). Neither one of us were familiar with the store, or knew anyone that had shopped there before! Wow, something new to explore!
So, off we left this late morning to see this dresser that had caught Mom’s eye. We arrived at the store, and found several rooms of furniture, clothing, toys and everything in between...even fabric!

Mom found the dresser tucked in one of the back rooms , she checked it over with care and with a gleam in her eye, “ripped” that ticket off of the dresser to present it to the owner at the front desk! The hunt had ended, at least for the dresser. We have more finds on the list, one of which is a dainty chandelier. Wonder where we will find that, and what kind of a bargain will be had!? Fun fun!!

Almost Done with Renovations , and oh...Meet Bella!

It’s been another busy week!
We are winding down on putting our home back together from the flood.
We’ve painted both bedrooms and are now in process of the living room and laundry room.
It’s been a bumpy road, but I guess that is the norm when putting a house back together again , you never know what other issues will be found in the process...and we’ve found quite a few!

It’s been challenging trying to squeeze in work . I’ve barely been able to list on eBay or Etsy. I have found the time to stock the local booth at Harpeth Antique Mall, it’s not as time consuming as listing . ( One of the perks of stocking the booth has been taking a break from the house! LOL!)

I’m still out treasure hunting most weekends and I have a nice assortment of things to list when we get through this last phase of restoration. ( I’ve found some lovely vintage decorative items, leather Coach bags, hardware, books, vintage quilts and a Longaberger basket I’ve not been able to identify- yet!! )
I stopped at an unadvertised garage sale on Thursday and found Bella! She is my new head model for glasses and hats! Have been looking for her for sometime now , was so excited when I walked up to the table and she winked at me! I think she is very pretty and will be an asset to selling my accessories! Welcome to Entirely Apropos, Bella!

We all have chapters in our lives that take us in new directions. My brother and his wife have a new chapter in their life. They moved ( this past week ) from Franklin, TN ( where we live) to St. Augustine- Florida, to pursue a new direction in their life. We are very excited for them. They can use a new chapter that will bring them some joy . ( Sunshine and beach is always a good recipe for joy ! )
At the same time, it’s an adjustment saying goodbye and knowing they are no longer 15 minutes away. We already miss them, very much.

I’m Looking forward to a normal day again! ...I see that happening, soon!

I Love To Repurpose Found Objects!

Today I listed ( on Etsy.com) a sweet teacup by Haviland - France-Limoges.

I’ve had this cup for years. I found it at a tag sale (garage sale), when I lived in Denver.

It didn’t have the matching saucer, but that never stops me from purchasing a teacup ( or any other object) that doesn’t come with the matching companion piece. It allows me to get out of the box - mix and match with another piece that is in the same color palette , or repurpose the item.

A couple of ideas to reuse this piece would be to utilize it as a trinket container, or as a vessel to hold a votive candle.
I love the charm it adds to a home when using objects in unexpected ways!

Anne's Broccoli Salad - One Of My Favorite Things!

We are in the middle of construction ( on the house ) and learning all about french drains!
I miss the domestic part of life...cooking, cleaning ( yes, I miss it!) and gardening.
Life has turned upside down for a couple of months now, but it will bring me back to appreciating all the little things that I took for granted everyday.

This 4th of July, we were invited to a grill out and needed to supply a dish to pass. My first thought was a deli dish from one of our local grocery stores, but my Mom had a much better idea! - “Anne's Broccoli Salad!”

My cousin, Anne, turned us onto this delicious salad a few years ago. It’s one of our favorites. Anytime we need to take a dish to pass at any festivity, this is the one that has the most requests for the recipe. Bonus : You won’t have to be concerned with space in the fridge for left overs, there aren’t any!

Was nice to be back in the kitchen, cooking with my “Momma”! We have a good time and it creates an everlasting memory ...no matter how old we get!

Anne's Broccoli Salad:
1 bunch of broccoli
1 cup of chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1/2 cup sunflowers seeds ( kernels)
1/2 cup raisins
1 lb. bacon

Dressing:
3/4 cup mayo
2 tb. vinegar
1/4 cup sugar

Cut broccoli into small pieces.
Fry bacon until crispy. (remove as much grease as possible with paper towel, after frying).
Pour all the the ingredients together in a bowl.

Pour dressing over salad and mix.
Enjoy!

Beautiful Meakin China Pattern - Long Branch

A few weeks ago, Mom purchased a box of Meakin (china pattern-Long Branch) at a tag sale. She purchased them at a rock bottom price !

We LOVE this pattern, it was one of the most exquisite designs we have seen. If we had room to store them, they would have never made it to the booth ! They are beautiful!

The pattern is soft green with a white background , and gold accent.

We have them displayed in a vignette that is on the aisle way, at the mall. I have noticed, they will stop traffic. Most women have to stop to admire them. Mom said (when we were at the booth yesterday) that a lady picked one up and hugged it, remarking to her daughter, she “loved this color of green!”

Mom priced them to sell ... and they are!

Things That Make Me Happy!

Normally by now, we have the front porch planters filled with blooms ( plants ) that make us smile every time we look out the front door ( which is often!)

This year the gardens and front porch have been neglected. Half of our home flooded in the May . We are in the middle of renovation and as you know, there are always new problems that are discovered along the way! ( old home syndrome! ) Flowers and weeding have been placed on the back page of the to do list ( actually, it’s a book ! LOL !).

The other day, Mom and I stopped at a store to pick up something for the house and walked out with not only that , but a few plants to plant in a couple of the containers. We both decided that although it’s not a priority, sometimes it’s very necessary to do some things for yourself that make you smile when going through challenging times.

I planted the flowers this morning, which caused me to take a trip to our very messy shed to obtain the tools. I not only found the tools, but ran across these cute vintage enamel pots and coffee pot that I had forgotten about.

We had a few plants ( pre flood ) that I placed inside the enamel pots, and I used the coffee pot to hold my bags of miracle grow! It’s a fun way to decorate your blooms and use vintage containers in a unique way!

You’ll have to excuse the condition of the plants, as they have been neglected. I’m thinking that having my miracle grow so close at hand, will help me to remember to feed them on a consistent basis and they will grow strong and bloom all summer long.

For me, It’s those little things in life that make me smile and bring me much joy.

Franklin’s Marvin Stalnaker - Signed Print

Franklin, Tennessee is known for many things. Famous battles were fought during the civil war, beautiful rolling hills, friendly people , festivals, and a renowned artist by the name of Marvin Stalnaker.

We met Marvin when Mom and I use to participate in local craft / art shows ( years ago!).
Marvin was an iconic figure in the Franklin area...not only for his gift of fine art that portrays our local historic homes and buildings , but probably remembered just as much because of his charismatic, loving personality. He knows no stranger. He is an authentic person that remembers everyone and left an impression with us all.

Marvin moved to West Virginia a few years ago...but he left behind some incredible pieces of art for Franklin / Williamson Co. residents to enjoy for years to come.

If you are lucky enough to come across a Marvin Stalnaker print at a garage sale, you are a very fortunate person. Very few people give up their “Marvin prints”.

If you were fortunate enough to have met Marvin and own one of his prints, you can’t but help display his work with great reverence, and experience the essence of the artist through each piece he poured himself into.

Note: This signed print was given to me by our friend Carol, for me to sell in the booth. She is an avid garage sale queen and was fortunate enough to have found this at a sale.
I want to thank her for her loving heart ... she is such an awesome, loyal friend to us.

The Beginning of the Collectible Booth

Mom and I recently opened ( June 15th!) an additional (small) booth at Harpeth Antique Mall.
When we upgraded to a larger booth in March, Mom and I discussed the idea that “someday” it would be nice to open a smaller booth that we could sell our collectibles, Harley Davidson and miscellaneous “ manly “ merchandise in. After all, placing a Harley Davidson T-Shirt next to a frilly piece of lace doesn’t quite cut it , “visually”.

May 1st rolled around , when DeAnna ( the sweet lady that has a booth across from us), announced that she was moving into a larger booth and her SMALLER booth would be available! Well, that is all it took. Mom and I looked at each other , didn’t say a word ...but smiled at each other and it was almost as if the words “timing” were floating in the air. It was just this knowing that maybe ...(could it be?) ...the time had come! I mean, really ...it should be a no brainer! It’s right across from the “frilly” booth and it’s painted in a color that is almost the same color as our booth! ( well, the "color" comment sounded better at the time...now that I write that, it sounds rather silly! ...however, my point would be that we wouldn’t have to paint it!...there... that sounds much more sane!) We could easily stock booth booths and be able to keep an eye on things much easier than having a booth on one side of the mall and a booth on the other side of the mall! There... we’ve talked ourselves into it!!!!

June 15th we started moving into the booth that we now fondly call the “collectible booth”. It’s taken us several days, but we are getting there. Still have some shelves that need more inventory. Happy to report that we have already sold a drafting table , snake skin rug and a set of Curly, Larry and Mo dolls... as well as a few Harley Davidson items.

I’ve noticed a higher rate of male customers shopping in the new booth, than we have ever had before. Hopefully the rack of Harley Davidison T-Shirts blaring at them is a warm welcome.

We are really enjoying having 2 different looks ( booths) and catering to a variety of people that have different interest. It’s a whole new world for us to expand our horizons!

I'm Hungry, I Guess I'll Have To Eat My Words!

Funny story...my Mom has a fetish for sunglasses. I was just teasing her the other day when I borrowed her car - because her console was filled with sunglasses! ( of coarse, they are all garage sale find sunglasses ! ...so it really doesn’t count that there are so many! ) I told her that she MIGHT have room for a couple more , as there was still a little bit of space in the console!

This morning there were plenty of garage sales to attend, but a subdivision sale is priority! It’s like going trick or treating. You can attend many sales in a short amount of time, I guess you could call it power shopping! We love those subdivision sales!

Originally, Mom and I planned to go garage sale-ing (today) with our good friend , Carol. However, earlier this week, Mom wasn’t feeling very good and was sick for a couple of days. It was up in the air as to whether or not Mom would be able to join us. By the time 6:30 am rolled around this morning , I had her talked into going with us. After all, if she finds that she doesn’t feel well enough to shop, she can always sit in the car and enjoy some sunshine , air conditioning, and free entertainment of people watching !

So...one of the first sales we stop at , Mom decides she will take it slow and see how it goes. She isn’t moving at lighting speed, but she was moving. We made our purchases and lugged back to the car an armful of goodies, except for Mom...she had one small item in her hand and that was it. When we got out to the car, she was all excited to show us her latest “find”....and yes, there it was...a pair of SUNGLASSES !! (Oh my...she took me seriously!)

Mom made it through most of the morning and by 10:00 am we were all wiped out from the heat. We headed home to unload and revisit our finds that we so carefully (and excitedly) had chosen!

Mom had her newly acquired sunglasses in hand, and bee lined it for the computer! Sure enough, within a short amount of time she had researched the glasses . I suddenly heard a huge gasp come from her. I thought , what in the world is wrong? I quickly took a look at her screen and I found myself gasping as well ! To our total shock, she discovered they are vintage .Ted Lapidus, is the designer of the glasses . He was famous, in Paris, from the 60's- 80's. He died in 1989. His sunglasses were purchased by the rich and famous, and still are! ....and drum roll pleases....these are selling for ...oh....around $150. ! She paid .50 cents for them !!! Now that’s what I’m talking about !! Whoohooo!

Needless to say, I won't be teasing her about sunglasses anymore. If she hadn’t come out with us this morning she would have missed out on this spectacular “ find “... AND ... she would have missed out on making me eat my words! ( that would have been tragic) .

Merchandising the New Booth!

I’m having a blast merchandising our new booth (at the Harpeth Antique Mall) . I forgot how much I enjoy merchandising, setting a tone - creating an atmosphere that will hopefully draw people in and create sales.
In my few years as a visual coordinator, I always enjoyed walking up to a display that I had recently created to see if anything had sold . It was an unspoken “ atta girl” for me if something ( or hopefully several things! ) had sold.
Now, when I step into the mall and approach our booth, I’m always excited to see if there are any empty spaces, it lets me know that people are looking / shopping, and there has been interest. Hopefully, the displays are an unspoken part of the sales coming in.
I enjoy shopping in an environment that has been attended to. It makes me linger longer and find something that I probably don’t need, but am inspired to enjoy at home.
How about you....do you like shopping in an environment that is pleasing to the senses?
I would think most of us do...I’m interested in your thoughts about it!

Our Annual Garage Sale - June 2010

We had our annual garage sale inside the lower level of our home, which flooded in May of 2010 .

We decided to have it in what was the living room.
Since all our furniture was in storage, and the room was empty...waiting for drywall repair, we thought...why not? Air conditioning in the south is a LOVELY THING in June!

Soooo glad it was in air conditioning....we are dealing with high humidity and temperatures in the high 80's - lower 90's! Ughhhh !!!! Can't imagine hosting a YARD sale in this weather....way too hot for this girl, and her Momma, to deal with !

We had a one day sale, on Friday. It went well. We sold enough to NOT make it worth our time to open up on Saturday. Instead, this Saturday morning, we went hunting for bargains at other sales in the area! ( found some wonderful " finds" for eBay , Etsy and the booth !)

Our friend , Mark , came by this afternoon with his truck.
We loaded up his truck with the remaining items from our sale, and delivered them to “Our Thrift Store” , located in Franklin, TN. They are a local thrift store that serves a very special purpose-creating almost 20 ongoing jobs for young adults with disabilities.
